Market Data
Food, inputs, fuel, currency and wages across Sudan's 18 states
Food prices nearly doubled in a year while farm wages stood still
- Sorghum averaged SDG 2,465/kg, up 94% on August 2025; the WFP food basket rose 94% too.
- A day's farm wage now buys about 7 kg of sorghum, down from about 13 kg.
- The pound fell to SDG 6,150 per dollar on the parallel market; diesel is up 133–155%.
- Urea and DAP prices held steady, but DAP is getting harder to find.
- Rains were 45% of normal or less in northern Sudan; expect only a small harvest dip in prices.
Winter wheat planting is close and the pound is still falling, so imported fertilizer gets dearer each month you wait. Size imports with cooperative pre-orders, watch DAP availability, and look at working-capital programs.
Gedaref and River Nile — two key grain and wheat states — had no sorghum or food basket price in August's WFP report. Prices from verified agro-dealers and farmer offers will fill gaps like this.
Calculated reference only: shop prices are higher once freight, Port Sudan handling, inland transport, finance and margins are added. Real retail prices come from IFPRI's weekly survey and, from Phase 2, verified agro-dealers.
Urea and DAP shop prices held broadly stable in August after DAP dipped in late July. Wheat and sorghum seed rose early in the month, then eased; improved sorghum seed held above July. More traders report good urea supply, fewer for DAP.
IFPRI · Trader survey · weeklyParallel market SDG 6,150 per USD — a dollar costs 89% more pounds than a year ago; commercial banks SDG 5,500 (129% more). Every import — fertilizer, seed, fuel, spare parts — costs more in pounds.
WFP · Official survey · monthlyDiesel 133% (commercial) to 155% (parallel) above August 2025, though down in August. Farm wages averaged SDG 17,238 a day: above SDG 25,000 in South Kordofan, Khartoum and Gezira; below SDG 10,000 in North, Central and South Darfur.

Wages rose 1.8% while sorghum rose 94%, so a day's work buys about half as much grain.
Calculated from WFP wage and sorghum pricesPrograms setting cash transfer values in 2025 terms are now covering about half the food.
Calculated from WFPLivestock keepers' terms of trade worsened by about 13% as grain outpaced goat prices.
Calculated from WFPThe most useful signal for a farmer deciding whether fertilizer pays. This is a floor based on import parity; real shop prices from agro-dealers will give the true ratio for each state.
Calculated · World Bank × FX ÷ WFP sorghumJune–September rains were 45% of normal or less across northern Sudan. Rains arrived 20–30 days late in North Darfur and North Kordofan.
FEWS NET · OutlookSorghum deliveries to the Gadarif auction market from October 2025 to August 2026 were 218,604 tonnes, 16% below the five-year average. The auction price was 143% higher than a year earlier.
WFP · Official surveyThe harvest should ease cereal prices only slightly in many areas; conflict and El Niño-driven drought keep the west under pressure. The hardest months are expected in the 2027 lean season.
FEWS NET · OutlookUnit prices and quantities from tenders awarded on Hasad — seed, fertilizer, produce, transport — anonymised and shown by state when at least three contracts exist. No one else publishes what goods actually sell for in procurement.
